Regulation Respecting the Use of Winter Tires – 2019 Update

As of December 1 of each year, all motor vehicles registered in Québec, with the exception of heavy vehicles, tool vehicles and agricultural machines, must be equipped with four tires specifically designed for winter driving. This requirement is set out in the Regulation respecting the use of tires specifically designed for winter driving, enacted under the Highway Safety Code (section 440.1), and remains in effect until March 15 inclusive.

The tires installed must comply with recognized winter standards and bear the mountain and snowflake pictogram, or be studded tires authorized under current regulations.

This obligation also applies to rental passenger vehicles, mopeds and motorcycles. Failure to comply with this regulation may result in a fine ranging from $200 to $300, in addition to applicable fees.As of December 1, 2019, winter tires must be installed on all motor vehicles registered in Québec, except for heavy vehicles, tool vehicles and agricultural machines.

The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) reminds motorists that it is strongly recommended to install winter tires before December 1, as winter conditions may occur earlier in the season and compromise road user safety.
